He is the assistant director of defensive and head coaching for the California Golden Bears, and prior to that , he served as the football head coach for the Fresno State Bulldogs, a post which he held between 2012 and 2016.
DeRuyter joined Texas A&M as the defensive coordinator in the year 2010. The Aggies were ranked 104th in scoring defense during 2009 using a 4-3-2 defense. In 2010, under the 3-4-0 defense they rose to 21st place in scoring defense.
On January 23, 2017, DeRuyter was hired to be defensive coordinator at Cal.
Alongside fellow staff member Peter Sirmon, DeRuyter was named FootballScoop’s Linebacker Coach of the Year in 2019.
In his role as the coordinator of defense for Air Force from 2007 to 2009, DeRuyter changed the bend-but-don’t-break system with a frenzied 3-4 defense. Prior to DeRuyter’s arrival at Air Force, the Falcons were ranked 78th in scoring defense, and 78th in total defense. In 2009 the Falcons placed 11th on the scoring list, and 11th overall defense. In 2009’s Armed Forces Bowl 47-20 win against Houston The Falcons restricted the second-ranked offense in the country’s passing rankings to a season-low 222 yards of passing. They also had six interceptions.

An alumnus of Long Beach, California, DeRuyter was a student at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower and graduated in 1981. He played football in college in the Air Force from 1982 to 1984. He played outside linebacker and was a participant in three bowl game wins. His graduation from the United States Air Force Academy in the year 1985. The family he comes from is Dutch origin.
DeRuyter is known for improving the defensive capabilities of college football. Prior to his return to Ohio in 2002 in 2002, the Bobcats were ranked 99th across the country and when he left for Nevada and the Bobcats were ranked 22nd. He was fired by Fresno State on October 23, 2016, after starting the season 1–7 and 4–16 since playing in the Mountain West championship game in 2014.
