Timothy Manus Cooney (born December 19 1990) is an American former professional baseball player. He played previously in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals chose in the third round of the 2012 draft following his attendance at Wake Forest University and playing in college baseball with the Demon Deacons. He made his MLB debut on April 30, 2015.

On the 18th of November in 2016 Cooney was taken off waivers by Cleveland Indians. They released him on April 2, 2017. Indians let go of Cooney the following day on April 2 2017. Cooney signed an agreement with minor leagues to Cooney’s Indians the 6th of April in 2017. He played in just four games during 2017 as a member of the AZL Indians. He had an ERA of 6.00 ERA, due to injuries. He decided to go free agency on the 6th of November, 2017.

Cooney made his MLB debut on the 30th of April in 2015 replacing an injured Adam Wainwright in the Cardinals team’s starting rotation. Cooney was not a success in his debut and was then sent again to Memphis the following day. On May 17th, he won as the PCL pitcher of the week for giving up the batters to a 0.66 ERA in 13 /3 IP against the New Orleans Zephyrs and Omaha Storm Chasers. He also allowed batters to only an .143 batsman’s average (7-for-49). In his 14 first starts of the season at Memphis, Cooney completed 88 3 IP with 27 ER with an 2.74 ERA. He also hit 63 batters, and was 6-4 in win-loss decisions. He was selected on the 2015 PCL All-Star team on July 1st. The Cardinals were able to recall him the following day, when they put the outfielder Jon Jay on the disabled list.

Cooney was a student at Malvern Preparatory School located in Malvern, Pennsylvania. As a pitcher for the Malvern sports team Cooney was the winner of the Pennsylvania state championship in 2009. Although Cooney was offered scholarships by Ivy League universities, he decided to attend Wake Forest University to play baseball in the college league with the Demon Deacons in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In his sophomore year, Cooney was named to the All-ACC second team. After the 2011 seasonended, Cooney was a collegiate summer baseball player for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

The Cardinals selected Cooney during the third selection round the 117th selection overall from 2012’s MLB Draft. Cooney made his professional debut in 2012 as a player with the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A-Short-Short-Short- Season New York-P. 2013 was the year that Cooney made his professional debut. Cooney started the 2013 season playing for the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League, and was elevated into the Springfield Cardinals of the Class AA Texas League. They Cardinals welcomed Cooney to their spring training camp in 2014. With Springfield, he was a mid-season All- Star for the Texas League. Then, Cooney pitched for the Memphis Redbirds of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League (PCL) in 2014. He began his season for Memphis in 2015. The 2015 season was the first time Baseball America rated Cooney as having the highest control within the Cardinals organization.

Prior to the 2016 season, Baseball America rated Cooney as the second-best prospect in the Cardinals organization. However, Cooney missed the whole 2016 season due to a shoulder injury.
