In 1978, he was a professional sailmaker, producing and testing the sails in the ocean and educating yacht owners how to make use of the sails. He was employed by two international sailmakers from Liguria: Hood Sails in Sanremo and later at Rapallo for Horizon which later grew to later become North Sails Italia.

In June 1980 he moved to Fano and worked at the MSA Cantieri del Sole shipyard. After a few months of work Antonelli suggested to two co-workers that they open their own shipyard, found a client to finance him, and obtained a deposit of 20 million Lire to build a custom yacht. With that money the three founded Cantiere Navale dell’Adriatico in 1981.

In 1980 he returned to Ravenna, where he received an offer to work as Works Manager in a sailing boat manufacturer in Fano. Before accepting the offer he completed his racing commitments by competing in the World Championship selections, in the One Tonner Class.

In 1977, he returned to Europe to participate his first race in Fastnet Race.

In 1973, he joined of Raul Gardini’s team on the 45′ vessel “Naif”, designed by Dick Carter, who was the skipper and designer of Yachts which went on be the winners of the ’65 and 1969 editions of Fastnet Race, a 608-nautical mile race offshore between yachts which began in Great Britain in 1925 and has its name derived from it being named after the Fastnet Rock located south-west of the coast of Ireland. The same year, Antonelli was a participant as a participant in an event called the Admiral’s Cup.

In February 1976, he left to Marblehead upon the request of Gardini to continue the construction of sails and masts for the very first Il Moro di Venezia.

In 1979 he took part in the ill-fated edition of the Fastnet Race, in which an unexpected storm lost one hundred and five vessels, resulting in the largest rescue operation to ever take place in peacetime until that moment.
