Shlain was born within Mill Valley, California, the daughter of Leonard Shlain, a surgeon writer, inventor, and author as well as Carol Lewis Jaffe, a psychologist. While in high school, enthralled by the world of technology and communication, Shlain wrote a proposal that was dubbed Uniting Nations in Telecommunications & Software (UNITAS) that was a plan to have students from countries of war communicating via personal computers and through modems.
