In in the year 1980, at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, Wassberg edged out Finland’s Juha Mieto by 0.01 seconds in the 15 kmrace, the most close cross- country skiing competition ever in Olympic history. Wassberg later offered Mieto for the medal be divided between the two “as one one-hundredth of a second is nothing in a 15-kilometer race”. This led to the International Ski Federation (FIS) to alter their timing to the closest one-tenth of a second. The incident also led to an urban legend of apocryphal origin about how Wassberg as well as Mieto’s gold medals were split in half and transformed into half-gold, half silver medals. In 1984, at the Winter Olympics, Wassberg beat his rival Swede Gunde Svan in a race of 4.9 second in 50km race event, which was the largest winning margin ever in the event.
