Thomas Munkelt is one of the most popular and richest Athletics Competitor who was born on August 3, 1952 in Zedlitz, Germany. Thomas Munkelt (born 3 August 1952) is a retired East German athlete, winner of 110 meters in the hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
The highlight of his career was the Moscow Olympics in Moscow, in which he defeated second placed Alejandro Casanas from Cuba by 0.01 seconds. Munkelt was also a part of the fifth-placed 4x 100 relay team. He was successful in defending his title during the 1982 European Championships and won silver as a part of a relay team comprising 4×100. He again won in the European Cup in the next year, but he finished fifth in the first World Championships.
His personal best was 13,37 , which he set in August 1977 in Helsinki. This puts him in seventh place in the top seven German 110 m hurdlers following Florian Schwartzhoff Mike Fenner, Eric Kaiser, Falk Balzer, Thomas Blaschek and Sven Gohler.

Born in Zedtlitz Bezirk Leipzig in East Germany, Thomas Munkelt was a world- class high hurdler who was the dominant force in European hurdles in the 1970s and into the early 1980s. Munkelt became the very first person in history to surpass the 7.50 seconds mark for the 60m hurdles when he set a 7.48 minutes World Record in Budapest in 1983.
Munkelt was introduced to the world of athletics in the year 1975, when he won the first nine East German national championship title and the European Cup in 110 m hurdles. Even though he came in a in a disappointing fifth place at the 1976 Summer Olympics He was the winner of both the World Cup and European Cup in 1977. The first medal at an international championship was won when Munkelt was first at the 1998 European Championships.
After hearing the East German government’s decision to boycott the 1984 Summer Olympics, Munkelt decided to retire from athletics.
