The year 1986 saw Lange switched to single-sculls. But, illness kept Lange from competing in the same year. Lange recovered in 1987 and took home the first World Championship for singles in 1987,, beating Pertti Karppinen and Peter-Michael Kolbe who had previously been awarded only 10 out of 12 previous World or Olympic titles. Lange did it again in 1988 when he won the Summer Olympics held in Seoul. In 1989, he was again the winner of his World Championship.
In 1991, representing the unified Germany, Lange again won the world title in the single sculls. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Lange was a repeat winner in the single. For Lange, this was his fifth straight (non- consecutive) World Championship or Olympic victory in the single sculls.
Lange would go on to take third at the 1993 World championships, take 1994 off to concentrate on his medical studies, finish out of the running in the 1995 World Championships, and come back to claim a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics behind Switzerland’s Xeno Müller and Canada’s Derek Porter.
In the month of October, 1986 Lange was given the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold (first class) for his achievements in sports. The year 1997 was the year that Lange earned the Thomas Keller Medal for outstanding performance in rowing. At present, Lange is employed as a medical practitioner in Ratzeburg.

His first appearance on the international stage was in his first World Rowing Junior Championships, in which he was awarded an award of gold for the two the sculls (2x). Then he won the singles title at the following two Junior World Championships.
He began competing as a senior athlete in the year 1983 and at 19 he took home the double sculls in the World Rowing Championships with Uwe Heppner. They repeated the feat in 1985. Lange and Heppner could have been favorite for 1984’s Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, but East Germany did not want to participate in the event.
By that time East Germany was disintegrating and Lange began his studies as a medical doctor. His father was a member of the Stasi and committed suicide. Despite his demanding schedule and the emotional angst of his country’s disintegration, in 1990, with Stefan Ullrich, Lange won a silver medal in the double sculls at the world championships.
