Since 2002 Kunze has been working with his organization, the Christian Democratic Union (Germany) and is a memberand affiliated to the to the foundation for political research Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. His expertise is Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia. From 2005 until 2007 he served as Director for the Moscow Office and from 2007 to 2010 , director of the Europe/North America Section within the foundation. Since 2010, he has been for the second time Director of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation in Central Asia which has headquarters in Tashkent. Thomas Kunze is an advocate of a more energised cooperation between Russia and Germany and is in favor of the elimination restrictions on visas between EU as well as Russia.

Thomas Kunze was a student of History, German studies and the field of pedagogy at Jena as well as Leipzig. He was awarded the Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig in 1991. He was given an honorary professorship from the Presidential Academy in Tashkent and State Al-Khorezmi University in Urgench, Uzbekistan. He is Honorary Ambassador for Eastern Europe, Russia and Middle Asia at the Swiss-German Institute for Theoretical and Artistic Reenactment (IIPM), Zurich/ Berlin.
Following following the German Reunification, Kunze served as the director in the Foreigner’s Registration Office, district Leipzig from 1995 to. Between 1995 and 2000, the former lecturer was a guest instructor in Ovidius University in Constanta, Romania. He wrote the most comprehensive biography of the Romanian president Nicolae Ceausescu, which was translated into Romanian. The work is regarded as essential reading on the development of communism within Romania. The trial against Ceausescu which led to the execution of Ceausescu in 1989, was staged as a show directed by Milo Rau. Thomas Kunze served as a counsellor in the play. The film was filmed across Romania, Germany and Switzerland. The film was released in 2010.
Apart from travel reports and travel guides about Romania, Hungary and Turkey, he published numerous political analyses and articles, focusing on the development of Middle Asia, Eastern Europe and Russia. In 2008, his book Russia’s Underworld. Time travel through secret bunkers and forgotten tunnels. was published. In 2010, the volume Ostalgia international, edited with Thomas Vogel and in 2011, also with Thomas Vogel, the book From the Soviet Union to Independence was released. Together with Wolfgang Maier, he edited the volume Twenty-one. Dangers of our century – Possibilities of our century, in which different authors from all over the world deal with the challenges of our time – security, energy, demographics and geopolitics.
