Thomas Heatherwick is one of the most popular and richest Designer who was born on February 17, 1970 in London, England, United Kingdom. Coal Drops Yard is a public space as well as a shopping destination located in King’s Cross, London. The renovation project consisted of two structures built in 1850, and used to receive cargo coming from north England. The design ties two buildings together by stretching the roofs of the two buildings toward each other until they touch. This adds a third level and separate centre for the site’s linear layout. The roofs that are stretched protect the lower yard, which could be used for hosting events. The third floor will have the views over King’s Cross, the Francis Crick Institute and Cubitt Square. This project is part of the larger regeneration programme in the area led by Argent LLP and King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership (KCCLP). Coal Drops Yard was approved through planning in December 2015 and completed in the month of October in 2018.

In 2002, Heatherwick Studio designed The Rolling Bridge (also called “the curling bridge”) as part of the redevelopment in Paddington Basin. The bridge will move across the canal each Thursday and Wednesday at 12 noon, as well as on Saturdays at 2pm, however, it is not in operation. In order to allow access to the upcoming river traffic the bridge curves into an Octagon. The bridge is made up of eight triangular segments that are hinged on the walkway. It is joined to the walkway by two links that fall towards the deck, under the direction by hydraulic pistons. The Rolling Bridge won the 2005 British Structural Steel Award.

In 2005 Heatherwick Studio completed the East Beach Café at Littlehampton, West Sussex. The large steel structure houses a café by daytime and restaurant in the evening. The concept allowed the steel to rust and the colours to develop over time before being fixed with a transparent oil. The café won a RIBA National Award in 2008.

Heatherwick has won numerous design awards including the Prince Philip Designers Prize (2006), the London Design Medal (2010), the RIBA Lubetkin Prize (2010) for the UK Pavilion. In 2004 he became the youngest practitioner to be appointed a Royal Designer for Industry.

After graduation in 1994 from RCA In 1994 Heatherwick established Heatherwick Studio. Conran approached Heatherwick to create an inside display display at Conran Shop. Conran Shop, and this resulted in Conran’s first official commission. Mary Portas saw the display stand and decided to commission Heatherwick to create an exhibit in 1997 for London Fashion Week at the Harvey Nichols department store.
