He was the son of Hans and Katherine (nee Darst) French in Columbus, Ohio and was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. When he was at Indiana University, he was the editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student, the winner of an Poynter scholarship, and the recipient of the Hearst Competition for Feature Writing and graduated in the year the year 1980.
