in 1996 Gerritsen in 1996, Gerritsen wrote Harvest the first novel that was a medical thriller. The story was prompted by a conversation she had with the former homicide detective who was recently to Russia. He explained to her that children disappeared out of Moscow the streets and the police believed that the kidnapped kids were being sent to the United States to be organ donors. Harvest was her debut hardcover book, and it made her debut in the New York Times bestseller list at the number thirteen spot. After Harvest, Gerritsen wrote three other bestsellers in the genre of health thrillers, including Life Support, Bloodstream and Gravity.
The Surgeon received a RITA award Romance Writers of America in 2002 for Best Romantic Suspense Novel.
In 2006, Vanish received the Nero Award for best mystery novel, and was nominated for both an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America and a Macavity Award. She has also won approval from several of her contemporaries, including James Patterson and Stephen King, the latter of whom described her as being “even better than Michael Crichton”.
Gerritsen wrote the story with Gerritsen and the screenplay for Adrift that was telecast at CBS in 1993 as Movie of the Week in 1993. The show featured Kate Jackson and Bruce Greenwood.

Tess Gerritsen is the child of the son of a Chinese immigrants and an American-Chinese seafood chef. As a child within San Diego, California, Gerritsen often fantasized about being a writer of the first of her Nancy Drew novels. Her name was originally Terry and she decided to make it feminine while she was writing in romance novel. Though she was aspired to write but her family was skeptical about the long-term viability of a career in writing and prompted Gerritsen to pursue to pursue a career in medicine. in 1975 Gerritsen completed her studies at Stanford University with a degree in anthropology. She was fascinated by the diversity of human behaviour. She continued to study medical studies in The University of California, San Francisco. She earned her Medical degree in the year 1979, and began working as a physician at Honolulu, Hawaii.
Inspired by romance novels she loved reading during her time as a physician Her first novel was romantic thrillers. After the publication of two non- published “practice novels”, Call After Midnight was purchased by the publisher Harlequin Intrigue in 1986 and was published a year later. Gerritsen later wrote eight romantic thrillers in Harlequin Intrigue and Harper Paperbacks.
In 2001, Gerritsen’s first crime thriller, The Surgeon, was published and introduced homicide detective Jane Rizzoli. Although a secondary character in The Surgeon, Rizzoli has been a central focus of ten subsequent novels (see below) pairing her with medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles. The books inspired the Rizzoli & Isles television series starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander. Gerritsen also made an appearance in the series’ final season as a writer who helps Isles establish herself in the literary field.
