Terry Robb is one of the most popular and richest Guitarist who was born on August 14, 1956 in Vancouver, Canada. The family was raised at Vancouver, British Columbia, Robb was a transplant from British Columbia to United States with his parents after which he briefly resided at Pittsburgh, Pa., before moving to Portland, Ore., at the age of seven. He was involved in the arts and music at the age of seven, and was given his first guitar at age 8 by an aunt who was a the guitar and was a part of the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. The blues revival in during the 1960s became exposed to blues and country music, as well as ragtime, country as well as early jazz artists who were being revived, along with modern blues rock and jazz musicians that resulted in a lifetime of fascination with blues, as well as Americana music. He began playing in groups at the age of 12 dancing at local junior highs and high schools. He began performing in solo sets in cafes around Portland. After he graduated in 1974 from Parkrose High School in 1974 He pursued studies in fine arts and music theory with Czech-American composer Tomas Svoboda at Portland State University before obtaining his baccalaureate diploma in 1978.
Terry Robb received the Muddy Award for the Best Acoustic Guitar from the Cascade Blues Association for 19 consecutive years from the beginning of the award’s category in 1992 until the award was renamed in honor of him in 2011. Robb’s ongoing collaboration with Salgado, which included a national tour with Buddy Guy in 1995, led to a brief interlude to Lucky Records in 1997 with the release of Hit It ‘n Quit It. This was followed by a national tour with the Steve Miller Band and a guest appearance on NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” where Salgado and Robb performed their original composition “Bitter Tears” and Miller joined on guitar. The following year, Robb was invited to perform with the Oregon Symphony as a guest soloist.
Robb was inducted into the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame in 1998, and to the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2017 he received the “Paul deLay” Muddy Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Cascade Blues Association.
The year 1982 was when Robb began to establish himself as an artist on his own with his release of Terry Robb Band’s debut 45 Psychedelta and was then followed by the album Next Window which featured cover artwork created by comic artist John Callahan. The year 1987 saw Robb’s second album, Nice Try, marked the end of the electric band format with acoustic solo fingerstyle guitar tracks and also featured appearances by Fahey as well as Salgado. In Sensitive Guy, Robb returned to his electric band recordings, but also included a similar number of acoustic solo songs which was an electric/acoustic hybrid style that he would use in future live performances and recordings. A partnership with Ike Willis former member of the Frankzappa Band that led to his fifth album Jelly Behind the Sun, with Willis as the guest singer.

After college, Robb joined multi-instrumentalist “Ramblin’ Rex” Jacobosky, an associate of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, touring as a duo throughout the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to Jacobosky Robb became acquainted with guitarist Henry Vestine during the time that Canned Heat performed at Murphy’s and Me nightclub in Eugene, Ore., during their tour in 1980, which was the time he was asked to perform with the band as well as play the guitar of Alan Wilson. After Vestine relocated into Oregon, Robb helped him to establish himself within the local scene of music and sometimes joined with the band on guitar during their Pacific Northwest performances. Robb also got acquainted with blues harmonicist and singer Curtis Salgado, who was part of the Robert Cray Band at the time. When the steel strings fingerstyle guitar John Fahey relocated to Salem, Ore., in 1981, a mutual acquaintance offered him Robb’s demo version for “One Way Gal” by blues guitarist William Moore, and the two met in the backstage area following Fahey’s show at Luis La Bamba in Portland. The friendships they formed had an impact on Robb’s musical style and guitar technique and resulted in subsequent recording collaborations as well as friendships that have lasted.
Robb’s debut in recording production began at age 24 and was prompted by an invitation from John Fahey to produce his forthcoming albums for Varrick Records, a subsidiary of Rounder Records. From 1982 to 1994 Robb was a arranger, producer, and occasionally a guitar accompanist on eight albums by Fahey including Let Go The album that received Fahey an all-star review from Rolling Stone and marked a significant turning point in his career when Robb explored new music styles like Brazilian and modern pop. Robb also created the videos for “John Fahey Live in Concert” at The Freight and Salvage, “The Guitar of John Fahey Volume. 1. and 2” and “Christmas Songs and Holiday Melodies” to Stefan Grossman’s Guitar Workshop released in 1996. Robb Fahey and Fahey often performed in concerts across all of the West coast, appearing on radio and television shows and were lifelong friends until Fahey’s demise in 2001.
In 1994, Robb signed a multi-year recording contract with the Portland-based label Burnside Records, where he would release four albums and serve as producer, arranger and guitar accompanist on several recordings for other Burnside Records artists. His second Burnside release, Stop This World, featuring guest artists Maria Muldaur, Eddy Clearwater and Curtis Salgado, topped the Living Blues Radio Chart in 1997. During this time, Robb joined the supergroup Acoustic Guitar Summit with fellow Portland guitarists Mark Hanson, Paul Chasman and Doug Smith, performing throughout the West Coast in concert, TV and radio broadcasts, including “West Coast Live” with Sedge Thomson.
