Terry Murray is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on July 20, 1950 in Shawville, Quebec, Canada. Terry Rodney Murray (born July 20th 1950) is a Canadian retired professional hockey player. He is also an ex-head coach with the Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers and Los Angeles Kings. He is now as an assistant coach with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League.
Following a brief stint as a coach as the head coach for the Cincinnati Cyclones in the IHL, Murray became head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, where he formed his “Legion of Doom” line comprising Eric Lindros, John LeClair Mikael Renberg, John LeClair, and Eric Lindros. Over the course of three seasons as Head Coach of the Flyers (1994-95 until 1996-1997), Murray compiled a score of 118-64-30 and led his team to two Atlantic Division Championships (1994-95 and 1995-96) as well as 1998’s Stanley Cup Finals as the Eastern Conference Champion. After easily beating three teams with a series win of 4-1 and a 4-1 series win, the Flyers were defeated of the Detroit Red Wings in four games. However, Murray was fired after the the playoffs in 1997. One website had criticized Terry’s shuffle of goalie Ron Hextall and Garth Snow as disrespectful, and Murray was quoted as having described the loss of 6-1 during Game 3 of the playoffs as being a choke incident during a private meeting with his players. This upset them because the incident “exposed and pulverized” the “fragility of the team’s confidence”. Murray was a professional Scout for the Flyers during the 1997-98 campaign.
Murray served as a pro scout for the Philadelphia Flyers over parts of three seasons (2000–01 to 2002–03), and joined the coaching staff as assistant coach from 2004 to 2008.
He served as coach of the Los Angeles Kings from July 17, 2008 until December 12, 2011. At the time of his dismissal, he ranked third in franchise wins (139), fourth in games coached (275) and first in winning percentage (.560). Assistant coach John Stevens was named interim head coach. When the Kings won the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals under then-head coach Darryl Sutter, they requested the NHL to have Murray’s name included on the cup, but were denied by the NHL.
Murray later was the head coach of the team’s AHL affiliate The Baltimore Skipjacks. Murray was promoted into his Capitals head coach role during the middle in the 1989-1990 NHL season, taking over from the brother Bryan. Under Murray’s direction the Capitals were further ahead in the NHL playoffs than they ever had before and won two rounds before losing to Boston during the finals of their conference. Murray was the coach of the Capitals until midway through 1993-1994 NHL season, when the team was replaced by Jim Schoenfeld.
