He was the first skater and the only one to ever perform a legally-approved backflip that was then banned after the contest. Today the backflip is the most significant claim to fame in ice skating. Not as well-known is his ability to perform all six of his triple leaps (except his Axel). As a contrast Gold winner (John Curry) had only three triple jumps while getting the Olympic gold medal. Terry Kubicka (born April 3 1956) is an American retired figure skater, who is regarded as being the first American to do the difficult triple Lutz jump. He was his 1974 Prague Skate champion, 1975 Skate Canada International bronze medalist and the 1976 U.S. national champion. He also competed in his 1976 Winter Olympics.
Kubicka was awarded Silver at 1972’s Grand Prix International St. Gervais Kubicka also won silver at 1974’s Prague Skate, and bronze at the 1975 Skate Canada International. In 1974, at the U.S. Championships, he became the first American to complete three triple Lutz jump during competition. He scored three triple jumps during the long portion of his program and at the same time, earned second place and a place in the World Championships. Kubicka claimed that he completed the jump in the short program , however the jump was not recorded, so he repeated it with the lengthy.
