He played in 68 games in the four divisions of Rovers and scored 11 goals over two seasons. Brian Clough was wanting to get him signed but was put off by the price of $140,000, so he reportedly revealed to Curran’s brother his desire to ensure that Curran could not agree to a new contract, which reduced the fee for transfer. He signed with Nottingham Forest in August 1975 with Rovers receiving PS50,000, along with the keeper Dennis Peacock and winger Ian Miller. In his two seasons with Forest Curran played in 48 matches, scoring twelve goals in the Forest which helped them secure the promotion into Division One in the 1976-77 season. Curran was loaned to Bury during the month of October 1977. He later transferred over to Derby County in a PS50,000 move in the month following.
Curran continued to play for Wednesday until the conclusion of the 1981-82 season. but he did not repeat his scoring feats from the previous season, and the team also had the new goal-scoring star In Gary Bannister, this and an escalating relation between him and Jack Charlton led him to depart and sign with Sheffield United for PS100,000. Curran played 33 games for Sheffield United scoring three goals prior to changing clubs into Everton to stay for three seasons (having been on loan the season before) in which time Curran only played 24 games. Curran was with the club winning their First Division in the 1984-85 season, an achievement to which Curran played in nine games. Curran then played for a short time with Huddersfield Town before going abroad to play for Greek club Panionios NFC. He returned in the month of October to play a few games for Hull City, Sunderland, Grantham Town, Grimsby Town and Chesterfield before resigning from the game in 1988.
In October 2012, his autobiography “Regrets of a Football Maverick” was published.
His signing was an impressive purchase for Wednesday. He was the final player in Jack Charlton’s squad that eventually earned promotion from Division Three in 1979-80. Curran was a hugely popular and highly successful player at Hillsborough with 24 goals during the promotion season. Due to his fame, Curran was a member of the club of his own and also recorded a track known as “Singing the Blues”. Curran took part in an incident following season, during a game at Oldham on the 6th September of 1980. He was exiled following an altercation against Simon Stainrod causing Wednesday fans to protest, leading to the closing of Hillsborough terraces for the following four home matches.
