Before becoming a district attorney in the year 2000, he worked in the Rayville firm of Cotton, Bolton, Hoychick & Doughty. Doughty resigned from the bench on March 8, 2018.
On the 3rd of August of 2017 President Trump announced the nomination of Doughty to be an United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, to fill the vacancy left of the Judge Robert G. James, who was elevated to senior status on May 31st in 2016. On the 1st of November the 1st of November, 2017, an hearing on the nomination took place before members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. On December 7, 2017 the nomination was reported to the committee via a voice vote. His nomination is presently waiting to be approved by the entire United States Senate. On March 1, 2018 the Senate approved 94-2 the cloture procedure on his nomination. The nomination of Doughty was confirmed in Senate Senate in March 6th, 2018 with a 98-0 majority. He was formally appointed on March 7, 2018.

He was elected in 2008 as a judge for the Fifth Judicial District in Louisiana and replaced the his predecessor, judge Glenn W. Strong. He took over the office on January 1st, 2009.
