Gup was a 1968 graduate of the 1968 class at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, was a reporter for The Washington Post and Time Magazine prior to his stint in academia. Gup was also the Shirley Wormser Professor of Journalism at Case Western Reserve University before leading the department of journalism of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts and was a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient in 2003. In addition, he is a winner of the George Polk award in journalism given from Long Island University. He was also a recipient of the 1981 Gerald Loeb Prize for Newspapers with a Large Size and was awarded an Honorable Mention in that same category in 1984.

The year 1992, in the Washington Post Magazine article “The Ultimate Congressional Hideaway,” Gup was the first person to expose that there was Project Greek Island, a massive underground bunker in West Virginia’s renowned Greenbrier Resort to house the Congress of the United States in the event of strike by nuclear weapons on Washington, D.C., an event that is still controversial, even two decades after it was released. People who are against the revelation consider that the disclosure caused the $14,000,000 ($123,382,792 in current terms) the bunker, which was funded by taxpayers, ineffective and resulted in the demise of the bunker. Gup has defended the story in an interview in the Cleveland’s Plain Dealer, arguing that the Greenbrier bunker was no longer in use in 1992. “We sat on the story for a couple of months making sure it wouldn’t harm national security,” Gup declared. “The bunker mentality that preserved that place was itself a threat to national security. It’s exactly why you want an active press.”

In the Michaelmas term of 2015 he was a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Study at Durham University, where he was affiliated to the St. Cuthbert’s Society SCR.
