Taylor Madison Ruck (born May 28th in 2000) is an Canadian professional swimmer from Canada. She was awarded two Olympic bronze medals while part of Canada’s women’s 4×100 metres and 4×200 freestyle relay teams in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro. Ruck was awarded eight medals during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. The eight medals she won of one gold five silver and two bronze medals tied the record of three athletes for the highest number of medals ever at a single Commonwealth Games, as well as being the highest-scored Canadian female athlete to compete in one Commonwealth Games. Ruck is the all-time top athlete to win a medal in the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships with nine golds three silver and two bronze medals over the time during the World Junior Swimming Championships and the junior championships of 2017.
Ruck had bronchitis in the testing for Canada’s Olympic team. She was unable to initially qualify, however officials took her condition into consideration and added Ruck to the team for at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Ruck’s family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, U.S., before she was one year old. She does not hold American citizenship and continues to spend time in Canada while visiting family in Kelowna, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. She attended Chaparral High School in Scottsdale. She attends Stanford University, starting school there in the fall of 2018.
Following the Commonwealth Games, Ruck carried her success that season into the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo. Ruck began the meet with a bronze medal in the women’s 100 m freestyle, while adding bronzes in the 4×100 and 4×200 m freestyle relays. She then beat American star and fellow Stanford swimmer Katie Ledecky in the 200 m freestyle, leading from start to finish. CBC commentator Byron MacDonald said of Ruck’s race and form that “anytime you beat the best female swimmer in the world… it’s a huge step forward.” Ruck finished the competition in the 200 m backstroke where she out- touched Regan Smith at the wall for silver in the event. This gave her five medals, the most by any Canadian at a single Pan Pacific championships. After a fantastic meet and a tremendous season put the world on notice, Ruck said of swimming in Tokyo, the site of the 2020 Olympics, that “this sets my expectations higher. I just love Japan and hopefully I’ll be able to come back here in two years.”
To conclude the 2016 season, Ruck and her teammates took home a gold medal at the FINA short-course world championships in swimming 4 200 freestyle relay. Ruck was who was swimming in the second part of the race recorded the fastest split time in the finals with the time of 1:51.69. She also took home the bronze award in the 200-meter individual freestyle. In 2017, Ruck relocated back to Canada to take part in training with the High Performance Centre – Ontario which was supervised by Ben Titley. She began her training there alongside teammates Oleksiak, Toro, Van Landegham, Rebecca Smith, Sandrine Mainville, Kayla Sanchez as well as Richard Funk.

Ruck was awarded her gold in the 100-meter freestyle during the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Singapore smashing the Championships record in both final and heats. She also took home the 200-meter freestyle also in a record for championships. While swimming in the 200 m freestyle event, she lowered the championship record twice when she set a 1:57.08. Ruck also set a 100 m championship record while leading off the 4×100 m relay when she swam to a 53.63.
