Tatsuo Miyajima is one of the most popular and richest Sculptor who was born on January 16, 1957 in Edogawa, Tokyo, Japan. On the 9th day of August 1945 the atomic bomb was launched in Nagasaki. A large number of people were killed by the fierce blast and heat and Nagasaki was deemed a city in the middle of Nagasaki was smashed to dust. There was however one kaki tree that was able to survive the disaster, even though more than half of its tree’s trunk was burned black and barely standing poised to go to the grave at any time. The year 1994 was when Masayuki Ebinuma was an arborist. He began treating the tree’s fragility and restore its health so that it was capable of producing “seedlings” from the bombed tree. Then , Ebinuma began handing his “saplings” from the survivor tree to children visiting Nagasaki to symbolize peace. After Miyajima was aware of Ebinuma’s work and wanted to help Ebinuma for his talents as an artist. He then showed the saplings in a display and also recruited foster parents to an art show in 1995. They received ten applicants and chose one of the old Ryuhoku Elementary School located in Taito-ku, Tokyo as a planting location. In the course of this procedure, Miyajima had conceived an art project dubbed “Revive Time: Kaki Tree Project” and established an Executive Committee. The initial plantation of the project was held in the old Ryuhoku Primary School. Miyajima himself led a class during the ceremony to plant trees.

The first solo exhibitions of Miyajima’s are “Human Stone” at Gallery Parergon, Tokyo in 1983 in 1983, and “Time” at Maki Gallery, Tokyo in 1986. He has also exhibited his work at Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (1996), Fondation Cartier for l’Art Contemporain (1996), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1997), Miyanomori Art Museum, Hokkaido (2010), and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2011).

Miyajima made his first LED counter in 1988; this has formed the basis for much of his later work. Typically, a block will display two digits in red or green, and count from 1 to 9. The counters never register zero, because, for Miyajima, the idea of zero is a purely Western concept. He has subsequently linked together different displays so that they can respond to each other; he calls these systems ‘regions’.

Miyajima is represented by Buchmann Galerie and Lisson Gallery. In 2010, one of Miyajima’s works, “T. L. Sakura”, was sold for $375,173 at Christie’s Hong Kong.

In the 1970s, Miyajima was a practitioner of performing art in the 1970s. He was initially inspired by works from Joseph Beuys, Allan Krapow and Christo and saw his performances in the context of the definition of an “action for society”. In the desire to make durable work – in contrast to the often temporary nature of his performances and actions – prompted his to start working on sculptures and installations.
