The year was 2016, and she ruled in opposition to Indiana Governor Mike Pence’s decision to reduce federally-funded funds to help resettle Syrian refugees in Indiana.
On March 9, 2009 Pratt stated her intention to apply for a federal judgeship to his staff Indiana Senator Evan Bayh. After speaking with representatives from the United States Department of Justice and the Office of the White House Counsel, Pratt was nominated by President Barack Obama to the judgeship on 20 January 2010. In the Senate, Senate confirmed Pratt with a vote of 95-0 on June 15th, 2010. Her appointment was granted the following day. Pratt took over the position that was left by judge David F. Hamilton, who Obama appointed to a seat in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Pratt was the very only African American federal judge in Indiana’s history.

Pratt was appointed the Marion County’s Probate Court in 2009 and was there from 2009 to 2010.
Born from Indianapolis, Indiana, Pratt graduated from Cathedral High School, then continued on to obtain the Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman College in 1981 and the Juris Doctor from the Howard University School of Law in 1984.
In 2018, she ruled against a pregnant woman who was mauled by a police dog because she was not the intended target.
