Tangela Nicole Smith (born on April 1st 1977) is a retired American basketball player from the WNBA. Smith was a regular player for the majority of her playing career with the Sacramento Monarchs and the Phoenix Mercury where she was the winner of 2 WNBA Championships. Smith is now coaching assistants at Northwestern University.

Smith was picked as the 12th pick in 1998’s WNBA Draft by the Sacramento Monarchs. Smith played for six seasons with the Monarchs and helped them make to the postseason five times. In 2005 she was transferred by the Sting in exchange for Nicole Powell. Charlotte went under after the 2006 season. Smith’s rights were bought from the Minnesota Lynx in the dispersal draft.

On Draft Day in April 2007, she was dealt to the Phoenix Mercury for No. 1 overall pick Lindsey Harding.

On Friday, 13 August 2010 she overtook Vickie Johnson and became the WNBA’s all-time leader in games played with 411 in 13 seasons. During her time in the league she missed 15 games.

The WNBA offseason of 1998-99, Smith was a professional basketball player in Italy, Israel, South Korea and Turkey. As of 2001, Smith was a part of helping the Botasspor team to take home the Turkish league title. The following year, she assisted with the Shinsegae Coolcats win the Korean league championship. She is now playing for the Hungarian Championship since February 2013 as part of The 2012 Champion Team, HAT-AGRO UNI Gyor.

Growing up within Chicago, Illinois, Smith was a student at George Washington High School, where she was named an 1993 Kodak High School All-American. Smith was selected as an High School All-American by the WBCA. She was part of the WBCA High School All-America Game in 1994and scored three points.

Smith played for USA Basketball as a member of the 1997 Jones Cup Team that won the silver medal in Taipei. Many of the games were close and players from the USA squad winning 4 times with a score of six or less and also winning an overtime game in the semi-final match against Japan. The gold medal match with South Korea was also close however the USA were defeated 76-71, securing the silver medal of the tournament. Smith was able to score 8.0 scores per match.

Smith graduated from the University Of Iowa in 1998. She won the 1998 Big Ten Player of the Year award. She was also a 1998 Kodak/WBCA All-America honorable mention and earned 1996 and 1998 All-Big Ten first team and 1997 All-Big Ten honorable mention accolades.
