Tang Yaodong (Chinese: Tang Yao Dong born on 17 February 1962 in Shenyang, China), is a Chinese football manager as well as a the former Chinese soccer player. He played primarily as an attacking centre player for Liaoning FC.
After a brief time as an assistant coach, he was elevated to head coach following Liaoning’s poor start in this year’s Chinese Super League season. In his first year at Liaoning it was not able to have much success, except to improve the team’s performance and bring them back to mid-table in his first time leading a top-flight club. Liaoning’s comparatively poor performance resulted in Tang Yaodong willing to step off before the start in the Chinese Super League season, however , the club stood by all season long, even though the results didn’t improve throughout the entire season. The same pattern would be repeated during the season of 2007 Chinese Super League season, however Liaoning was unable to keep up with the pace at conclusion of the season. With the contract of Tang Yaodong due to expire, they decided to not renew it.
On 19 April 2012, Tang was appointed as the new manager of China League One side Chongqing Lifan, replacing Lawrie McKinna who was sacked from the club five days before.
Following his retirement, he would be the head coach of Liaoning Youth team. Liaoning Youth team from 1996. This continued until 2001, when the team was permitted to play in the second level that is the league in 2002. The team changed their name to Huludao Whowin. He was permitted to remain on the team during the 2002 league season in order to assist the team during their transition to the league structure of professional players. This led them to a respectable sixth place in the league. The 2003 season of the league saw the team being taken over by SVT Group and move to Nanjing, Tang Yaodong did not follow the team and remained in Liaoning FC where he was given an assistant job with the squad.

Tang Yaodong began his football career with his home soccer club, Liaoning FC’s junior team. He would then graduate to the senior team during the league season of 1983. After a few seasons, he would eventually gain prominence as he helped Liaoning win the league championship. This would be one of the many awards that would follow. Tang Yaodong would play an essential role in a dominant Liaoning team that helped them take home their first Asian Club Championship. Even though they won another league title, He would move to a second-tier Japanese team called Otsuka Pharmaceutical in the 1992 league season. After just one season there, he would be transferred back with Liaoning FC until he retired.
Tang Yaodong would make his senior debut in a friendly match against Korea DPR on August 24 of 1986, with a draw of 0-0. Under the guidance of Gao Fengwen as head coach the player would soon be an integral player in the Chinese team. He would score the first time with Singapore during a friendlies game on September 1, 1986 , in the 3-0 victory. Tang participated in every single game for China during the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea as they lost in the opening round. He also participated during the 1998 AFC Asian Cup and help China finish 4th in the tournament. However, the moment China did not get into at the 1990 FIFA World Cup Tang Yaodong’s involvement was limited and essentially ended after Gao Fengwen departed his Chinese team.
On January 7, 2008 new Head coach Jia Xiuquan brought in Tang Yaodong as his assistant for ambitious Chinese Super League club Henan Construction, however their reign was considered unsuccessful and Jia Xiuquan resigned on June 15 while Tang Yaodong left soon after. When Portuguese Head coach Acácio Casimiro was sacked during the 2008 league season Tang Yaodong was brought back into the club as a short term solution to help salvage the season. At the beginning of the 2009 league season he remained as their manager and surprisingly the team’s form dramatically improved. His reign would see Henan achieve their best ever league position of third and he would personally win the Coach of the year award.
