On February 5, 2015. Tan was transferred to the Chinese Super League side Chongqing Lifan. On December 23, 2016 Chongqing Lifan officially confirmed that Tan quit the club due to a dispute over the extension of his contract. On the 9th of January, 2017 Tan was back at Tianjin Teda.
Tan Wangsong began his career at Sichuan Guancheng where he would become the primary right-back of the squad, and even though the team regarded him as a thin player. He was able to draw the attention to the coaching staff by his bold and energetic approach to playing. His time with the club ended as Sichuan Guancheng disbanded and he was transferred to a elite club, Qingdao Zhongneng. Moving to another Chinese Super League team in Tianjin Teda would allow him to make himself an integral player in the team which qualified for their first AFC Champions League. They would play their first match during the competition on March 11, 2009, with Kawasaki Frontale in a 1-0 loss at the time of the AFC Champions League.

Tan was a part of the China national football team under 23 and was a member of the team at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In a rare incident that attracted international notice, in the match against Belgium on the 10th of August the 10th of August, 2008 Tan received a red card for striking Sebastien Pocognoli’s crotch.

Tan was given a five-game ban in addition to his red card in the game against Belgium on August 10, 2008, he earned himself when he was playing for China’s Chinese U-23 team at the 2008 Olympics and earned him a reputation as an unclean player. Due to his poor reputation and an argument with the club’s authorities Tan was transferred into Henan Construction on 12 February 2010.
