In 2017, a taxi driver called De Anda, whistling and calling “Eh, guapa”, literally “hey beautiful”. The argument grew confrontation that lasted up to the point that De Anda reported the man to a police officer who was passing by. The driver of the taxi was punished. He refused to pay , and instead chose to spend the night in prison. The incident was covered by the world media after her tweets on the incident became viral. Following the event, she’s been a victim of both rape and death threats. In a statement issued to the 38th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Amnesty International, Association for Women’s Rights in Development and other organizations identified the mockery, criticism, as well as “threats of physical aggression, sexual content and sexist jokes” targeted at De Anda as “emblematic of a broader trend” of online harassing women who are human rights activists.
