Takamoto Katsuta is one of the most popular and richest Racing Driver who was born on March 17, 1993 in Nagoya, Japan. In his final year in Japanese Formula 3, Katsuta began rallying locally at the level. He began his rally with the Toyota GT86 in the JN-5 class of the Japan Rally Championship (a series which his dad, Norihiko, has won eight times). In his second race that was in the Rally Highland Masters, Takamoto took first place in his class, and placed 10th overall. The ultimate goal of Takamoto was to be accepted in Toyota’s Development Driver Program. His performance at the rally in Japan attracted the attention of the four-time World Rally Champion and future Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT team director Tommi Makinen. He accepted him into Toyota’s program along with Hiroki Arai.
In the beginning of his involvement in partnership with Makinen along with Toyota, Katsuta would participate in select rallies and train all-time in Finland under the supervision of Makinen. Katsuta’s first rally in conjunction with Tommi Makinen Racing took place in the local Finnish as well as Latvian events in the Subaru Impreza WRX. From the beginning of 2016 Katsuta was scheduled to rally with a highly experienced co-driver, Daniel Barritt. Katsuta was able to achieve some success in local Finnish rallies, and was equipped with the Ford Fiesta R5 for the Rally Estonia, his first large-scale long-distance event using FIA-homologated four-wheel drive equipment. It also marked his debut attempt at the European Rally Championship. He was unable to finish the race after colliding during the second leg. However, Makinen promoted Katsuta and Hiroki Arai to their first World Rally Championship start at Finland and they took part with the WRC-2 Class. Katsuta was 12th in the class, a mere 16 minutes behind the winner of the class.
Beginning in 2017, Katsuta would be participating in a full-season World Rally Championship program in the WRC-2 category, alongside Hiroki Arai. Katsuta would also be rallying in local rallies outside of Finland. He partnered Marko Salminen for this season. Successes for the two drivers were few and far between, but Katsuta would make a name for himself upon taking a class podium at the Rally Italia Sardegna.
Towards the end of the 2018 season, Toyota announced their intentions to eventually run Katsuta in a World Rally Car potentially by 2020. He spent 2019 competing in the WRC-2 class with Tommi Mäkinen Racing. After two seasons with Elfyn Evans, Daniel Barritt returned to be Katsuta’s co-driver. Katsuta’s first outing with a Toyota Yaris WRC was at the SM-Itäralli, a round of the Finnish championship, in which he would impress with a victory.
Based on the results Katsuta enjoyed with Formula Challenge Japan, the TOM’S team enlisted Katsuta as the driver in their Japanese Formula 3 Championship in 2012. He raced within the National class. He was third in this category and was later elevated as a full championship-winning driver in 2013. Katsuta enjoyed great success in 2013 with two wins and finishing second overall in the championship with a win over drivers like Katsumasa Chiyo, and a future participant in the McLaren Young Driver Programme, Nobuharu Matsushita. The next year, in 2014 was to be Katsuta’s final season racing in Formula 3. He was not as successful with his 4th place finish in the standings, and claiming two wins.
