On the 18th of January, 2009 Kinchla was married by his wife the entertainment journalist Carrie Hill. The couple reside in Austin, Texas with their Teacup Yorkshire Terrier Laverne. On February 7, 2011, they announced they had been expecting their first child. On February 9 13, 2013, John Popper announced the arrival of the twins of the couple, Jack and Dylan, by sharing photos of them on the Twitter account which he runs with Kinchla.

Kinchla was raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Kinchla is the younger brother of the longtime Blues Traveler guitarist Chan Kinchla. He began playing upright bass when he was a kid after his brother was decided to play the guitar. His graduation of Princeton High School in 1991 The same school that the other members of the group went to (with one exception, the keyboardist Ben Wilson). After the high school years, he went to the university and was a graduate of Brown University. In Brown studying political science, he also studied as well as lacrosse. He also formed the group Dowdy Smack, which was later joined by internet celebrity Ze Frank.

In 1999, when Kinchla was performing in a group known as Smit-Haus Blues Traveler’s first bassist Bobby Sheehan died. There was a gap in Smit-Haus for the replacement bassist. Kinchla was among five bassists who auditioned for the position. He was the first bassist to be selected, and auditions were performed live in the New York bar called Bar Bat but not in studio. His audition was the very first show by the band following the death of Sheehan and was held without rehearsal.
