Her contributions to the arts and her artistic accomplishments have earned her numerous awards at the international and national level which include those of Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, Frankfurter Musikpreis, the Hessian Cultural Prize, and the International Prize of the Chigiana Music Academy of Sienna.
A fervent advocate of music of the 21st and 20th century, she’s had notable success in performing her version of the “Sonata for Solo Viola” composed by Gyorgy Ligeti. The work premiered in 1994. Other contemporary composers who’ve composed pieces specifically for her are Heinz Holliger, Wolfgang Rihm, Georges Lentz, Bruno Mantovani, Sally Beamish, Enno Poppe, and Josef Tal.

Born in Lahr in the city of Lahr, she started learning to play the violin at three. She began piano studies at the age of five. When she was 13she began studying the viola with Ulrich Koch at the Conservatory of Freiburg and then moved on to studies in the studio of Sandor Vegh at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg. Soon after, she was noticed in international competitionsand won top prizes at Geneve (1982), Budapest (1984) as well as at the Maurice Vieux International Viola Competition in Paris (1983) in which she received an outstanding instrument created by the contemporary Luthier Etienne Vatelot (1980) that she has been playing on her international concerts ever since.
