Shelly Berg is one of the most popular and richest Music Pedagogue who was born on August 18, 1955 in Cleveland, United States. Shelton “Shelly” Glen Berg (born August 18 1955) is an American musician, composer and arranger. He is also an orchestrator and producer. He is the Dean and Patricia L. Frost Professor of Music at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
Berg also worked with Hollywood studio arranger-orchestrator Dick Marx and Tom Halm at Sunset Sound Recording Studios. He composed and was an orchestrator for the CBS television show A League of Their Own (1993) and the weekly ABC TV series Fudge (1995-1997) and was the orchestrator on the motion-picture Almost Heroes. He released critically highly acclaimed album together with The Shelly Berg Trio which include The Joy (DMP, 1995), The Will: A Tribute to Oscar Peterson (CARS, 1998) as well as Blackbird (Concord Records 2005). He also composed all of the songs in the album called Ray Sings Basie Sings (Concord 2006) and served as musician and music director in The Great Performances television show We Love Ella! A Tribute to the First Lady of Song (PBS, 2007).
While in Miami, he earned his first Grammy nomination in the category “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)” for his arrangement of “Out There” on Lorraine Feather’s album Tales of the Unusual (Jazzed Media). He was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award in the category Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) category for his arrangement of “What a Wonderful World” on Gloria Estefan: The Standards. He was nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award in the Best Arrangement Instrumental and Vocals category for his arrangement of “Be My Muse” on the Lorraine Feather album Flirting with Disaster (Jazzed Media), and nominated again in 2017 for his medley arrangement of “There’s a Boat that’s Leaving Soon for New York / I Loves You Porgy” recorded on the Clint Holmes album Rendezvous (Concord).
Berg relocated from Los Angeles, California in 1991 to join the faculty of music in the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. He was the McCoy/Sample Endowed Professor of Jazz 2004-2007; Chair of Jazz Studies, 1994-2004; Professor, 1998-2007; Associate Professor, 1995-1998; and Assistant Professor, 1991-1995. He was the president of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) between 1996 and 1998 and was named one of the three “Educators for the Millennium” by The Los Angeles Times, 1999; and was awarded his Dean’s Award for Scholarship and Research, USC Thornton School of Music in 2005.

He was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (1977 Summa Cum Laude) and an M.A. of Music in Piano Performance (Composition Conducting and Composition 1979, summa Laude) at the University of Houston School of Music where he took piano lessons alongside Albert Hirsh and Abbey Simon and was also the student conductor of the choir and orchestra. In his freshman year, the student was a substitute for a few days with the Woody Herman Band, and was a regular performer throughout his college career with a range of professional musicians on tour. He also worked as lecturer in The University of Houston, 1979-1981 as well as taught music theory from 1977 to 1979.
Berg began his professional career in the music field at San Jacinto College North in Northshore, Texas, as the Chair of Instrumental Music from 1979-1981. Then, he was the Chair of Instrumental Music and Commercial Music for San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas from 1981-1991. He played extensively in professional ensembles, including Larry and Marilyn and The Brass Connection, featuring trumpeter Larry Martinez and singer Marilyn Savage. He learned how to perform Latin trombones with Kido Zapata at this time. He composed and arranged songs for national and regional commercial campaigns. He also maintained an active recording and performing career with musicians ranging in age from Country musicians Mickey Gilley to jazz trombonist Bill Watrous.
Shelly Berg is Dean of the Patricia L. Frost Professor of Music at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, appointed in 2007. In addition, he is a master teacher for the Frost Experiential Music Curriculum.
