T. Selva’s very first article first appeared in New Straits Times when he was only 14. Since then, he has been writing pieces written in English as well as Malay to various newspaper (New Straits Times The Star, Straits Echo, Watan) and magazines (Gema RTM, Sinar Zaman) during his teens. He was a part of The Star in February 1980 and after a brief stay in the office, he was assigned to be the newspaper’s official correspondent in Klang. He was a part of in the Klang office for six months, and among his most memorable stories were those relating to the maritime industry and ports.

Selva was assigned to Kuching in the year 1986, in order to establish The Star’s headquarters in the city. He was the correspondent with Sarawak during two consecutive years. He also reported on news from Brunei. He also worked in the Ipoh bureau for a short time before returning to the newspaper’s headquarters in the year 1990 to assume the post of Assistant Editor for the Metro section. Selva was the first to introduce and later became the editor of the newspaper’s Maritime Section for nine years. Selva later went to create the Metro supplement for The Sunday edition of The Sunday Star. In the following two years, as the editor of the Metro Section Selva was promoted to the newspaper’s Senior News Editor. Later, in 2010, he was promoted to the position of Chief News Editor. He is now the Senior Consultant Editor.

During his stint there, he also covered the official functions and activities of His Highness the late Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. He was awarded the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK) from the Sultan for his outstanding work and writings on the state. Selva wrote a moving piece on the Sultan (who was the King when he died on 21 November 2001), published in The Star on 22 November 2001.
