T. R. Sharma is one of the most popular and richest Botanist who was born on May 20, 1965 in Hajipur, Bihar, India. Sharma’s research is centered around his research on genomics as well as resistance to plant diseases. He has focused on improving the yield of rice. His work on the rice blast disease that is caused in part by Magnaporthe oryzae fungus led him to the identification of the Pi54 (Pi-kh) gene, which demonstrated resistant to disease. In addition, it was successful in cloning the gene from the Indica Rice Line Tetep using the positional cloning method. He devised new DNA markers like SSR, STMS and SNP and identified Pi54rh and Pi54of two alleles, both new that were isolated from wild rice and were resistant against Magnaporthe oryzae. Investigating the sheath blight illness of rice, caused due to Rhizoctonia Solani group headed by him identified the QTL gene as a novel one, qSBR11-1. It was instrumental in the creation of resistant varieties of rice like Pusa Basmati 1637, and HPR 2880. The creation of a brand new Cloning protocol for the gene AvrPi54 that is derived from Magnaporthe oryzae, as well as the sequencing of genes from rice tomato, pigeonpea, Magnaporthe, and Puccinia were among his other contributions. His research has been described in numerous articles. ResearchGate the online repository of scientific research, has listed the 77 articles. He also has six Indian patents related to the methods that he’s developed.

Sharma was elected as a fellow by the National Academy of Sciences, India in 2007, the same year as he received the elected fellowship of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He received the J. C. Bose National Fellowship of the Science and Engineering Research Board in 2013 and the Indian National Science Academy elected him as a fellow the same year. The award orations delivered by him include the 2016 edition of the Prof MGK Menon Lecture of the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute.
