Swen Erick Nater (born on January 14th 1950) is a Dutch retired professional basketball player, who played primarily within the American Basketball Association (ABA) as well as the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is the sole player to lead each of the NBA in rebounding and the ABA with rebounding. Nater was a two-time ABA All-Star and was the 1974 ABA Rookie of the Year. He played basketball in the NCAA tournament with UCLA Bruins. UCLA Bruins, winning two National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles.
In the season 1983-84, Nater got traded to the Clippers together with a recently-drafted Byron Scott to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Norm Nixon Eddie Jordan, and the 1986 second-round draft selection (which was later sold with the Phoenix Suns and become Jeff Hornacek). Nater as well as Scott played a key role in guiding their Lakers towards their first NBA Finals that year, but in the following season, the team didn’t offer him a guarantee contract.
Nater helped John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins win two NCAA titles. He was a backup to Bill Walton, and averaged just 3.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game as a senior. He never started a collegiate game—his primary role was helping to develop Walton in practice.
Swen Nater was born in the Netherlands, his parents divorcing when he was three years old. When his mother remarried and the family’s economic situation deteriorated, she, her husband, and Swen’s younger brother moved to the United States, leaving Swen and his sister in an orphanage. After three years it appeared they would remain in the Netherlands until a television show, It Could Be You (a forerunner to This Is Your Life), discovered the situation and brought the two siblings to America to be reunited—on TV—with the rest of the family. At age nine, he was in a new country and did not speak a word of English. Swen graduated from Long Beach Wilson High School in California.
Nater’s NBA career started in Nater’s NBA career began with Milwaukee Bucks, and he was traded after just one year for the Buffalo Braves. When the Braves were on the field in San Diego, Nater became an instant favorite in the city. Nater was the leader of both the ABA and the NBA in rebounding per game in the 1979-80 season being the only player to hold the top spot in both the NBA as well as the ABA on rebounding.

Nater was chosen in the ABA Draft by The Floridians in the 1972 ABA Draft, and then by the Virginia Squires in the June 1972 ABA dispersal draft following the loss of the Floridians. Nater was also selected during the initial round of 1973’s NBA draft, with the 16th overall selection made of the Milwaukee Bucks; he was the first NBA first-rounder who participated within the NCAA without ever playing in an NCAA game. Then, in August of 1973 Nater decided to join the Squires. On November 21, 1973, Nater was traded to the Squires transferred Nater with San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio Spurs for a draft selection and $300,000.
Together with his team, the Spurs, Nater was the American Basketball Association Rookie of the Year. He was also the leader of his team in ABA with field-goal percentages in 1974. He was the leader of his team in ABA on rebounding as of the year 1975. He was selected as a member of the All-ABA Second Team in 1974 and in 1975. He was a participant as a player in the ABA All-Star Game both seasons. In his three years in the ABA, Nater played for the Spurs, Squires, and the New York Nets.
He built the basketball program at Christian Heritage College in San Diego, California, and coached from 1985 to 1995. He left the position because it “was high on work and low on pay.” He was living in El Cajon, California, where his two daughters were born and raised.
