Dandekar (Marathi: svaatii daaNddekr ; born on March 6 1951) is an ex- Iowa state legislator, and also a the former U.S. Executive Director at the Asian Development Bank

In the course of her campaign in 2014 for Iowa 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, Dandekar was formally endorsed by the National Organization for Women.

A Democratic representative on the Iowa Utilities Board, awaiting Senate confirmation in 2012. In the past she was an elected Member of the Iowa House of Representatives for the 36th District from 2003 to 2009 and was also a participant in the Iowa Senate for the 18th District from 2009 until. She earned her B.S. degree in Chemistry and Biology at Nagpur University and a graduate degree in dietetics at the University of Mumbai. Dandekar currently serves as Chair (formerly president) of the National Foundation for Women Legislators and is a board member for the Iowa Math and Science Coalition as well as which is part of the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation, and the Belin- Blank International Center for Gifted & Talented. Dandekar was previously a member of the board of the Iowa Association of School Boards as well as being an official of the Women in Public Policy (Iowa Charter) and the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy. On the 23rd of July, 2013, Dandekar declared she was running for U.S. Congress from the 1st congressional district. She lost the primary to the former speaker of the state house Pat Murphy, who himself was defeated by Rod Blum.

Prior to being elected into be a member of the Iowa General Assembly, Dandekar was a two-term member on the Linn-Mar Community Schools District Board between 1996 and 2002. In the same period the governor Tom Vilsack appointed her to the Vision Iowa Board, a position she held from 2000 until 2002. She started her legislative career in 2002 when she won an election for District 36 of the Iowa House District 36, beating Republican Karen Balderston. Dandekar won re- election two times with a win with Republican Cory Crowly in 2004 and Republican Nick Wagner in 2006 prior to her run for the Iowa Senate. Dandekar won in 2008 against Republican Joe Childers for election to Iowa Senate District 18 and was there until she resigned at the end of 2011 in order to take the appointment of Governor Terry Branstad for the Iowa Utilities Board for an expiring term in 2015.

Dandekar has been awarded numerous awards which include her J. C. Penney Education Golden Rule award, the 2003 Pillar of the Community award from Waypoint in recognition as an 2003 Flemming Institute Fellow and recognition by the Elliott School of International Affairs’ Global Economic Conference. Dandekar has received three honors as Person of the Year. one time at the time of 2002, by India Abroad, once in 2003 by the Asian Alliance of Iowa, and again during 2008, by AsianWeek.
