Susanne was born in Vasteras with Inga Britt Lorentzon (a 1960 Olympian for Sweden in the high jump) and Inge Lorentzon, a Swedish national male sprint champion. Susanne took her mother’s footsteps and the younger sister of her, Annika began sprinting with her father. Her international debut was in 1977 at the European Athletics Junior Championships, finishing 13th overall. As a teenager she was able to match the feats of her mother, winning the Swedish high jump title in 1979. She was chosen to compete for her country in the 1988 Summer Olympics. In her Olympic debut, she jumped an impressive high jump of 1.85 meters (6 4 inches) at 6 feet) in the qualifying round, but was not able to make it into the semifinal.
Her career’s peak was in 1985. She broke the Swedish record with 1.94 meters (6 feet 4/4 inches) to win the silver medal during the 1984 IAAF World Indoor Games and was able to match that record outdoors. She was also fourth in the 1985 European Athletics Indoor Championships – the highest score she has ever had at this event. She also jumped to represent Sweden at European level both indoors and out in 1986, but she was not able to reach the same levels. Her final medal for an individual was won in the Nordic Indoor Athletics Championships that year. She jumped 1.87 meters (6 1 2 inches)) to win the medal ahead of Finn’s Niina Vihanto.
Lorentzon made it to the finals for Lorentzon was a finalist at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1982 and 1983, and was placed thirteenth at the 1982 European Athletics Championships. Lorentzon was selected to represent Sweden at the first 1983 World Championships in Athletics, however, she was not able to make an international final. She was a dominant national athlete and won all outdoor and indoor titles between 1981 until 1986 (bar the indoor title of 1982).
