Carr’s career in media began in 1974 when she joined ABC Radio in Perth as an announcer. Within two weeks of being hired by this station, she broadcast at Christmas Day when Cyclone Tracy was a threat to Darwin. She worked on television and radio at Perth at the ABC becoming the first female news anchor working in Perth working for ABC.

Carr was invited by the station to become a member of TVW 7 in 1985 and was a prominent face in Channel 7 news in Perth alongside her co-anchor for many years, Rick Ardon. With their watch the bulletin, which was then second rate (Seven nightly news was second only to National Nine News in Perth in the year 1990) was able to climb to the highest ratings in Perth which is where it remains until today.
