Susan Jean “Sue” Woodstra (born May 21 1957) is an American former female volleyball coach and player who took home the silver medal for team USA National Women’s Team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

Woodstra has been inducted in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006.

Woodstra began coach as an assistant coach at Arizona State in 1995 until she was appointed the chief coach for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers women’s volleyball team in 1989. she was director of the team until. In her time she guided her teams through Big East Conference Tournament Championships every season, in addition to three Big East regular season championships as well as winning the regular season every year since it was announced that the Big East instituted round-robin play in the year 1990. She also guided Pitt Panthers to four postseason appearances, including a Women’s Invitation Volleyball Championship appearance in 1989 where Pitt was third in the tournament, along with the team won three NCAA volleyball tournaments, one of which was in 1990 when Pitt made it to the regional semifinals and was ranked 17th on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches poll. Woodstra was awarded Big East Coach of the Year awards in 1990. She was awarded the title in 1990. NCAA Tournament teams were coached by a standout second-team All-American outfielder Ann Marie Lucanie, who received numerous Big East Tournament MVP awards as well as Big East Player of the Award of the Year. In all, Woodstra compiled an overall record of 110-39 (.738) during her four years as the head coach.

On the college stage, Woodstra received All-American recognition at USC and played for eight years for the United States women’s national volleyball team. She was captain for four seasons and also during the 1984 Olympic silver medalists. Woodstra was also a professional volleyball player from 1984 until 1988 with The NEC Red Rockets of the Japan V.League. She also played three seasons with the Merrill Lynch/Reebok USAVBA team, where she was awarded the MVP award.

After her stint in Pitt, Woodstra became the head coach of the SC Munster women’s profession volleyball team in Munster, Germany, and helped the team win the CEV Cup championship in 1992. Woodstra was then an assistant coach on a voluntary basis for Notre Dame for one season before being appointed the head coach for the University of California, Berkeley Golden Bears volleyball team from 1995 until 1998. The year 1999 was the time Woodstra got a job as an assistant at Florida State before serving as the head coach of the Humboldt State University Lumberjacks from 2002 until 2012.

Woodstra took a leave of absence from coaching at Humboldt State in 2007 and the beginning of 2008 in order to serve as the head coach of U.S. women’s national volleyball team in 2007 and an assistant coach during the 2008 Olympics. In 2007, she led the team to a bronze medal at the Pan American games. Woostra served as the first assistant coach for the silver-medal winning U.S. Olympic women’s team in 2008.
