Sebeok then asked her to look into the roles in the work of Women in Semiotics particularly Victoria Lady Welby. What began as an unintentional chapter on Welby was later transformed into a decade of archival research and an enormous book about Welby’s writings and publications specifically Signifying and Understanding and Understanding: The Works from Victoria Welby and the Signific Movement. To write the book Petrilli looked into Welby’s Welby archive at York University, Toronto, Canada and in the Lady Welby Library, University of London Library and the British Library in London, United Kingdom. The work of Welby’s epistolary was comprehensive, as she exchanged and tested her ideas with around 600 contemporary scholars and semioticians. Paul Cobley remarked: ‘Petrilli’s adventure (…) has brought the writer across Australia to Italy starting with an idea for a PhD thesis to the depths in archive research, then then towards a new future for culturally influenced, politically inflected semiotics’.
Petrilli was recognized as seventh Thomas A. Sebeok fellow from the Semiotic Society of America in 2008. The award is tri-annual and recognizes for outstanding research and contributions to the advancement of the concept of signs, for innovation in her research, and for contributing to the spread of semiotics across the globe.
