She was a student at Sandgate District State High School and graduated when she was fifteen after finishing the 10th grade. The year was 1971 when she finished her the course in secretarial work through Kangaroo Point Technical College on an award of award. She was secretary for a construction association, an architectural firm and an exploration company prior to beginning her work as receptionist for a team of barristers. In this period she graduated from high school and started studying law.
In the month of October, Kiefel was appointed Deputy President of the Australian Federal Police Disciplinary Tribunal and was elected the President on April 4, 2004. The year 2003 saw Kiefel became a part-time commissioner to the Australian Law Reform Commission, and was appointed for another three years in the year 2006.
In August 2009, Justice Kiefel was granted an Honorary Doctorate from Griffith University. Justice Kiefel was chosen to recognise her distinguished contributions to the legal profession and for leading the way for women in the industry. On 13 June 2011, she was named a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to the law and to the judiciary, to law reform and to legal education in the areas of ethics, justice and governance.
On 29 November 2016, the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, and the Attorney- General, George Brandis, announced the appointment of Kiefel as Chief Justice of Australia. The appointment took effect from 30 January 2017, following the retirement of Robert French. Kiefel is the first woman to be appointed as Chief Justice. She has been succeeded as a Justice of the High Court by James Edelman.
Kiefel received her bar admission in the year 1975. She was appointed honourary secretary to the Queensland Bar Association in 1978 and served on the committee from 1993. Kiefel was appointed queen’s counsel for the first time in female form for Queensland in 1987. She became a member of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission in 1989. On May 23, 1993 Kiefel was named to as a member of the Supreme Court of Queensland. In the following year, she received a nomination from Keating Government. Keating Administration as a judge on the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island and was among the first female judges to be elected for the Federal Court of Australia on 17 October 1994, shortly after Justice Deirdre O’Connor was appointed.

Susan Mary Kiefel AC (/”‘ Kiefel AC, k i: f@l born on 17 January , 1954) is Chief Justice for Australia who has been in office from January 30th, 2017. She has been a member of the High Court since 2007, prior to that, she was a judge on the Supreme Court of Queensland and the Federal Court. Kiefel was the very first female to be appointed as Chief Justice.
The year 1973 was the time Kiefel was employed by a solicitor firm as a clerk. After completing her schooling at night and entered the Barristers Admission Board course and completed her course with distinction. In 1984, during her unpaid leave, she earned the Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Cambridge, where she was given the C.J. Hamson Prize in Comparative Law and the Jennings Prize. She was appointed into an Honorary Fellowship at Wolfson College, Cambridge.
On 13 August 2007, Attorney-General Philip Ruddock announced Kiefel as the nominee to the High Court of Australia to replace the retiring High Court Justice Ian Callinan. Kiefel had previously been considered a favourite nominee to replace former High Court Justice Mary Gaudron when she retired in 2003, and again in 2005 as replacement for Justice Michael McHugh. Kiefel is the third female High Court Justice and the forty sixth overall. Her appointment alongside incumbent Justice Susan Crennan marked the first time two women sat concurrently on the High Court bench.
