In August 2018, Governor Kim Reynolds appointed Christensen to the Iowa Supreme Court. On September 21, 2018, she was sworn in as the new governor of Iowa. Christensen is Reynolds her first appointment as a judge on her position on the Iowa Supreme Court. She was the first woman since 2011, and the third woman overall to join the court.
Christensen served as an associate judge in the Iowa Fourth Judicial District from 2007 until 2015. She was she was a district judge for the same district starting in 2014 until she was appointed for her position on the Iowa Supreme Court.
