Summer Edward (born 10 March 1986) is a Trinidadian American writer as well as a children’s editor, teacher as well as a literary activist and literature specialist who is based in the USA. In 2010 at the age of 24, she established Anansesem ezine, which was the first publication of children’s literature within the region of English as a spoken language. She served as the editor- in-chief for 10 years. She is among the Caribbean’s newest literary editors. She has served as an editor and judge for writing contests, such as the Golden Baobab Award to promote African children’s literature as well as the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards as well as the CODE Burt Awards, as well as the OpenIDEO Early Childhood Book Challenge. Her articles on multicultural literature for children are published within The Horn Book Magazine, WOW Stories: Connections from the Classroom and sx salon. Charlotte Huck’s Children’s Literature: A Brief Guide, The Millions, NoveList (EBSCOhost) and many more. The year she was born, she received an Master of Education degree in reading, writing, and literacy at the University of Pennsylvania. At the time, she served as the graduate assistant of the Dr. Lawrence Sipe, then North American editor-in-chief of the journal Children’s Literature in Education, and a prominent academic in the field of literature for children. It was during Sipe’s courses that she first became interested in publishing children’s books as a potential career. She was a straight-A student throughout her time at university and is a lifetime Roothbert Fellow and a lifetime Phi Beta Kappa membership.
Edward discovered her talent through her time at the Kelly Writers House in Philadelphia where she took part with the Naomi Jackson’s Literary Boot Camp for Women Writers. Edward is “received writing residencies and awards from the Cropper Foundation, the Roothbert Fund, the School of the Free Mind, the Highlights Foundation and the Tengo Sed Costa Rica Writers Retreat”. Her adult-oriented writing is published in a variety of literary magazines around the world. Edward has been twice shortlisted for the Small Axe Literary Competition, lastly in 2016, and was also nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She was chosen to be part of the National Geographic Bocas Literature Festival’s New Talent Showcase, which showcases the top emerging writer in the Caribbean. Her writing is included within the anthology New Worlds, Old Ways: Speculative Tales from the Caribbean written by Karen Lord (Peekash Press, 2016). She also contributes to the New Daughters of Africa anthology written by Margaret Busby. She has appeared in Nat.
