The year she was born, she received an Master of Education degree in reading, writing, and literacy at the University of Pennsylvania. At the time, she served as the graduate assistant of the Dr. Lawrence Sipe, then North American editor-in-chief of the journal Children’s Literature in Education, and a prominent academic in the field of literature for children. It was during Sipe’s courses that she first became interested in publishing children’s books as a potential career. She was a straight-A student throughout her time at university and is a lifetime Roothbert Fellow and a lifetime Phi Beta Kappa membership.
