He scored two goals on March 17, 2007 against Notts County and followed it by scoring the winning goal at Stockport County on 20 March and both matches were played at Memorial Stadium. An injury to his stomach prevented him from joining the team and his loan period was ended in April, when he was sent back with West Brom to have a hernia surgery.

He signed with Newcastle Blue Star in August 2008.

On 18 January 2008 Nicholson joined Wrexham on a three-month loan deal. In April Albion confirmed that they would release the player in the summer when his existing contract expires.

Nicholson was signed by Bristol Rovers on loan in November of 2006. For someone born in north-east England He has been a huge fan of the club ever since being presented with the Bristol Rovers shirt as a present at the age fourteen. The loan was set to run for three months however Nicholson was called up just four weeks before the deadline at the hands of West Brom, before returning to Bristol Rovers for a second loan period in that same time.

On 7 November Nicholson joined A.F.C. Bournemouth on a week’s trial,Bournemouth could not meet the asking price having been made available for transfer by Newcastle Blue Star after making five substitute appearances scoring in all up to that point in the 2008–09 season. After having been released by Blue Star midway through the 2008–09 season, Nicholson trained with Blyth Spartans
