Franklin is born June 16, 1956 in Guys Hospital in London. He was trained in drawings under Leonard McComb in Oxford and Whitechapel, London, and from 1976 until 1979, photography was taught at West Surrey College of Art and Design and later was awarded a BA. Between 1995 to 1997, he pursued a degree in geography at the University of Oxford, first receiving a BA as well as an award called the Gibbs Prize for geography. He was awarded a doctorate degree in Geography from the University of Oxford in 2000. Franklin was given an honorary professorship in photography for documentary in the year 2016. He teaches photography as well as video storytelling in Volda University College, Norway.

In 1989, Franklin was part of Greenpeace on a trip with Greenpeace to Antarctica. He wrote about twenty articles in National Geographic between 1991 and 2009, including the story of Inca conqueror Francisco Pizarro and the hydro-struggle in Quebec and other places like Buenos Aires and Malaysia. Additionally, he was involved on cultural and book projects. In October 2008 the work Footprint The Footprint of Our Landscape in Flux was published by Thames & Hudson. A darkly photographed account of Europe’s changing landscape it reveals Franklin’s environmental concern.

After joining Magnum Photos in 1985, the company became a full Magnum Photos member by 1989. The same year, Franklin captured the uprising at Tiananmen Square. He also shot an image from the Tank Man images that was later released by Time magazine, as well as extensively documenting the protests in Beijing which earned him an award called the World Press Photo Award.

Stuart Franklin (born 16 June 1956) is a British photographer from the UK. He is a part of Magnum Photos and was its President from 2006 to 2009.

From 1980 to in 1985 Franklin collaborated from 1980 to 1985 with Sygma at Sygma Paris. He also documented the civil conflict in Lebanon and the plight of unemployment in Britain and the famine in Sudan as well as the Heysel Stadium disaster.

During 2009 Franklin curated an exhibition on Gaza – Point of No Return for the Noorderlicht Photo Festival. Since 2009 he has focused on a long term landscape project in Norway published as Narcissus in 2013. More recently he has worked on documentary projects on doctors working in Syria, and immigration in Calais. Franklin’s most recent book, The Documentary Impulse was published by Phaidon in April 2016. It investigates the nature of truth in reporting and the drive towards self-representation beginning 50,000 years ago with cave art through to the various iterations and impulses that have guided documentary photography along its differing tracks for nearly 200 years. Franklin was the general chair of the World Press Photo jury 2017.
