Herrick was the youngest out of seven kids. His first poem that was published composed at the age of eighteen and titled Love is like an gobstopper. He quit school in the year 10, which was the age of his death. He went to university to study poetry and earned his B.A. in poetry from The University of Queensland in 1982.
The year 1984 was when he relocated to Sydney and began to perform his poetry in bars and clubs of the city, usually as a backing band for local musicians. Then, the move, he was approached by Mighty Boy Records to record an album of his own poetry, called “The Esoteric Herrick’. The record was played on various alternative music radio stations. It was soon followed in the form of his next album, ‘The Herrick Manifesto.’
His books for children and young adults have been translated into numerous languages and are regularly set on school text lists in his native Australia. In 2019, the German translation of “by the river” won both the German Catholic Book of the Year Award and the prestigious German Youth Literature Award at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
