Steven Callahan (born 1952) is an American author inventor, naval architect and sailor. The year was 1981 and he sailed for 76 days in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean in a liferaft. Callahan wrote about his experiences in the most-seller book Adrift: A Day at Sea: 76 Days Sea (1986) that was listed on The New York Times best-seller list for more than 36 weeks.
When making the 2012 film Life of Pi, director Ang Lee asked Callahan to serve as a consultant for living on a life raft. Ang Lee told Callahan, “I want to make the ocean a real character in this movie”. Callahan created lures and other tools that were featured in the film.
Callahan left Newport, Rhode Island, United States, in 1981 aboard the Napoleon Solo, a 6.5-meter (21.3-foot) sailing sloop that which he built and designed himself and sailed it solo to Bermuda and then continued the journey to England together with his friend Chris Latchem. He quit Cornwall in the fall of 1981, heading to Antigua in the Mini Transat 6.50 single-handed sailing race starting from Penzance, England, but was unable to finish the race at La Coruna, Spain. Weather conditions had caused the sinking of many of the boats within the fleet, as well as injured many others, like Napoleon Solo. Callahan repaired the damage and continued to sail along the coastal areas from Spain and Portugal and towards Madeira as well as the Canaries. He left El Hierro in the Canary Islands on the 29th of January 1982, still heading towards Antigua. Amidst a strong wind seven days later his boat was punctured by an unknown object in a night storm and then flooded but it didn’t sink completely due to the compartments that were watertight Callahan created to the vessel. In his book Callahan mentions that he believes that the cause of the damage was an encounter with the whale.

They were drawn by the ecosystem which had grown around the raft. In the course of his ordeal it was a battle with attacks from sharks as well as punctures to the raft physical and equipment damage and psychological stress. He had lost about a third his weight and covered by a multitude of sores from saltwater He was admitted to the local hospital for an afternoon treatment, but then left in the evening, and spent the next weeks recuperating on the island, and traveling by boat up to into the West Indies.
