Stephen “Steve” Wooddin (born 06 January 1955 in England) is an ex- New Zealand association football player who was a key player during the country’s impressive campaign to be a finalist for 1982’s FIFA World Cup in Spain. Wooddin was a right-footed attack star.

The next year was the year that saw New Zealand begin the long route towards winning the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Wooddin was selected to play in every game of the final campaign that was successful and scored eight goals during the tournament and scoring trademark left-foot shots that hit the bottom of the goal both at home and away from Australia as well as in the match against Kuwait during the controversial loss at home of 1-2 and also during the game in Riyadh with Saudi Arabia when the team scored a stunning victory of 5-0. The result of this match caused a play-off match against China which took place in Singapore on January 22, 1982 which was the occasion when Wooddin once again struck with a left-footed shot to score the opening goal in the 2-1 victory for his team.

Despite the unconvincing results, Wooddin was selected for the next match, in August, against Mexico in Auckland. He scored the fourth goal in a 4–0 win that remains one of the most outstanding and unexpected results in New Zealand’s international football history.

Wooddin played as one of New Zealand’s two scorers at the 1982 World Cup (along with Steve Sumner) He scored his second New Zealand goal in a 5-1 loss to Scotland. Wooddin also played in the following games against the Soviet Union and Brazil.

The family was raised from Birkenhead England. Wooddin began his career with Tranmere Rovers in Birkenhead, where he made a few first-team appearances before making the move towards New Zealand in 1977, joining Dunedin City. After 1981, the player relocated to Australia where he played for three seasons for South Melbourne FC in the NSL before returning to his country of Christchurch United until his career was ended due to an injury to his ankle that kept recurring in the year 1984. The Belgian First Division team had been looking to sign Wooddin due to his impressive performances during the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain however, having already been hampered by injuries, he did not pass the medical.

Wooddin was the first player to be chosen to join Wooddin was first selected for New Zealand national football team the All Whites for a 16 May, 1980, 1-1 draw against the Southern Region team in Christchurch. Wooddin was able to keep his spot in the team, which was defeated 2-1 by the Central Region selection two days after the match in Wellington.

In 1983 injuries reduced Wooddin to just two international appearances, against Australia and Fiji. He made his last two appearances for the All Whites against Fiji in October 1984, scoring the winner in the first of these matches, before being forced to retire due to injured ankle ligaments with 24 A-internationals and 11 goals to his credit.
