Wiest reside in Denver and has a house in the mountains in Taos, New Mexico. Wiest owns three children through his previous marriages: a daughter, Amber who is married to Pam Sonmor Wintz, and two sons, Matthew and David with Carmen Watzka Wiest. The father of his son, John Thomas Wiest (1932-2006) was a trombonist, and the mother of his son, Wanda Jean Smith Stegall (1934-2016) was a special education teacher. Wiest has three brothers, Jeanne Stegall Keene, Robert Wiest and Andrew Wiest who is a historian of the University of Southern Mississippi. His brother, Nick Drozdoff, is a musician and jazz trumpeter located in the Chicago region who played along with Maynard Ferguson in the 1980s.

From 1988 until 1990, Wiest was Director of Jazz Studies as Assistant in the University of Texas at Arlington which among others, he supervised the UTA Improvisation Camp and directed the Small Jazz Group Program.

From 1994 to 1999, Wiest was a member of the Doc Severinsen Big Band. In 2006, Wiest reunited with Maynard Ferguson for Ferguson’s final series of concerts: 6 nights, 12 sold-out performances at The Blue Note, Greenwich Village.

From the fall of 2007 until August 2014, Wiest was at the University of North Texas as Assistant Professor of Jazz Composition and Jazz Trombone. Wiest founded The U-Tubes, the College’s trombone band. In May 2009, Wiest became director of One O’Clock Lab Band and coordinator of the Lab Band Program, after having served as interim director since August 2008.

When he graduated in 1985 Wiest entered graduate study in the University of North Texas, receiving a master’s in Jazz Studies in 1988. There, he performed as the as the lead trombone of The One O’Clock Lab Band, who performed in Australia in 1986, and recorded one live album as well as 4 studio recordings. The three compositions as well as the arrangement that he composed were recorded Lab 1986, Lab ’87, and Lab 1988, while another piece was made available on Lab 1989, following his completed his studies. While in grad school, Wiest directed the Nine O’Clock Lab Band (1985-1986) He also served as an arranger assistant to Paris Rutherford (1986-1987), and also directed his own Three O’Clock Lab Band (1987-1988). Wiest played trombone under Vern Lea. Kagarice. DMA. In addition, Wiest also studied trombone with Jay Friedman of the Chicago Symphony.

Steve Wiest (ne John Stephen Wiest; born 1957) is an American trombonist, composer, arranger, big band director, music educator at the collegiate level, jazz clinician, author, and illustrator/cartoonist. From 1981 until 1985 the band was featured trombonist and arranger for the Maynard Ferguson Band. Wiest is currently in six years as an an Associate Professor in Jazz Studies and Commercial Music at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music. He is also the coordinator for the 21st Century Music Initiative at the school. Wiest is a teacher for the last 31 years that he’s played professionally as a trombonist, composer and arranger. From 2007 until 2014, Wiest was an Associate Professor of Music at the Department of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas College of Music and between March 2009 and august 2014, he served as head of the One O’Clock Lab Band and coordinator of the Lab Band program. In North Texas, Wiest also taught conducting, trombone, as well as was the director of The U-Tubes, the college’s jazz trombone ensemble. Wiest is three times Grammy nomination — both individually in 2008 for the Best Instrumental arrangement along with in 2010, for the Best Instrumental Composition and in 2010 for the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, which he also directed. In 2013 Wiest boasts more than 58 compositions and arrangements to his name, which includes 10 original compositions from his ongoing project (see the 2013-2014 project below).

After graduating from Hattiesburg High School, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Wiest obtained a bachelor’s with a major in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi where he was taught by Raoul F. Jerome. Following graduation Wiest joined the group from Maynard Ferguson as a featured trombonist, and was two arrangers, traveling for five to seven months between 1981 and 1985.

For 17 years, from 1990 to 2007, Wiest was the Director of Jazz Studies and Trombone Performance at University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, directing jazz ensembles, which included a standard modern big band and the university’s premier jazz band: an Art Blakey-style small group called The Jazz Symposium. He taught improvisation, music history, arranging, and classical trombone. For a number of years, Wiest was a member of the Faculty Brass Quintet
