Stephen Brian Tilson (born 27 July 1966) is a English soccer manager, and an ex-player, best recognized for his time as the manager of Southend United, where he was the manager for seven years. He was in charge for two promotions, and then two Relegations. He was voted Southend United’s greatest player in 2014. was named the best Southend United player by the fans.
The following two seasons that followed, Tilson was able to lead Southend through two successive promotions, to League Two to the Championship. Southend was also in the Football League Trophy Final in 2005, but was defeated by Wrexham. The success of Tilson led him to be pursue job opportunities for West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City but he was still at Southend. The month of November, 2006 saw Southend won a significant victory against the eventual Premier League champions Manchester United in the League Cup, but were exiled from the Championship at the conclusion of the 2006-07 campaign.
On 4 July 2010, Steve Tilson was placed on gardening leave by Southend United, bringing an end to his seven-year reign as manager.
Tilson was sacked as manager of Lincoln City on 10 October 2011 following a heavy defeat away at Tamworth.
Tilson was instrumental in developing Southend’s youngsters until the demise by Steve Wignall in November 2003. As the club was at risk of being relegated back to the Football Conference, Tilson was appointed caretaker-manager by the chairman Ron Martin and proceeded to remove Southend out of danger. In the same season, Tilson led Southend to the first ever national cup final in the history of the club and lost to Blackpool by 2-0 during the Football League Trophy Final. In March 2004, Tilson was approached for the role as manager on a permanent basis. He took the job deal.

The boy was born in Wickford, Essex Tilson began his football career at non- league teams Basildon United, Bowers United and Witham Town before being signed by the then Southend coach David Webb. In the 1990s, Tilson appeared in just less than 250 games, and played in the team that secured two consecutive promotions during the beginning of this decade. Tilson played for Southend for a long time. Southend with the exception of the time he was on loan at Brentford up to 1998 when he joined Canvey Island, serving as the captain of the club during his four-year period with the team.
The year 1999 saw Tilson came back to Southend United as the Director of the club’s new center of excellence. The creation of that was made possible through the grant in the amount of P276,000 by the English Sports Council. The position, which allowed Tilson to keep playing his career at Canvey Island, saw him as the person in charge of directing and training all the teams at the centre, which ranged from under 9 to 16 years old. After the resignation from David Webb as Southend United’s manager in October of 2001 and the rise to Rob Newman from reserve team manager to first-team manager Tilson’s job expanded to include Newman’s former responsibility for reserves. He joined the team in May, 2002. took a break from the curtain on his five-year run at Canvey Island to join Newman’s backroom team on a permanent basis, becoming a joint assistant manager alongside Blues previous striker David Crown.
On 3 January 2009, Tilson led Southend to a 1–1 FA Cup third round draw away at Chelsea, with Peter Clarke scoring a very late birthday equaliser. On 28 October 2009, following the club being threatened with administration and on- loan midfielder Lee Sawyer returning to Chelsea, Tilson came out of retirement to play for Southend in the Essex Senior Cup.
