Steven Earl Riddick (born September 18th 1951) is an American athlete and the winner of the gold medal for the 4×100 meters relay at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
It’s surprising that Riddick was not a huge success in his participation in the USA National Championships outdoors during his time in the sport. His top performance was fourth in the 100 meters (in 1974 in 1974, 1977, 1978 as well as 1979) while he was fifth at the 200 meters (in 1977, and in 1979) He was, however, the United States champion indoors at 60 years between 1977 and 1979. The indoor success of 1977 saw him being named the Track and Field News’ best indoor athlete in the country.
After graduation in 1975, Riddick moved first to Washington D.C. and then Philadelphia and continued to run for the Philadelphia Pioneers club.
At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Steven Riddick was eliminated in the semi-final of the 100 m race, but ran the anchor leg in the gold medal winning American 4 × 100 m relay team (with Harvey Glance, Johnny ‘Lam’ Jones and Millard Hampton). Riddick had finished third in the 100 m final at the United States Olympic Trials. He narrowly missed-out on doubling-up at 200 m at the Olympics by finishing fourth in the 200 final – he was narrowly passed in the closing stages by Mark Lutz.
Riddick was a track and field athlete for his school Norfolk State University until 1974 and won NCAA division championships. Then he became a part of in the Philadelphia Pioneers track club. They were the Philadelphia Pioneer Educational Athletic Development Club is the correct name of that of the Philadelphia Pioneers, were the creation by Alexander J. Woodley. In the years 1977-81 during which time Riddick was an active member and they were the top track and field club within the United States.
