His managerial career started in 1988 when he joined the Highland League with Elgin City. A player-manager for the debut season Paterson was a success during his period in the Scottish League at Borough Briggs winning the Highland League as well as the North of Scotland Cup twice as well as his first Northern variant of the Scottish Qualifying Cup. The club was dissolved in the year 1990 because of an agreement dispute in relation to pay.
He was offered the manager’s position at Aberdeen and became the club’s new boss on 11 December 2002. This move was not without controversy, as Paterson and his assistant Duncan Shearer were each supposed to have agreed a five-year contract with Caley Thistle not long before their departure to the Dons.
In November 2002, Paterson was strongly linked with the vacant manager’s job at Dundee United, but he stayed at Caley Thistle for another month.
A nickname of “Pele”, after six first-team games with Manchester United, his career was cut short due to an injury sustained in a preseason game shortly after his transfer from Sheffield United. Despite this and other issues in the long run, including a drinking and gambling addiction He did enjoy an athletic career that included stints playing in Hong Kong, Australia and Japan which was where the first foreign player to be a part of Japan’s national team.

In his professional career, Paterson played as a central defender. He joined Manchester United from Highland League club Nairn County in July 1975. Paterson made six games for Manchester United Red Devils over five seasons. He signed with Sheffield United in a PS60,000 deal , but an injury to his ankle sustained during training in the preseason led Paterson to quit the team.
Paterson returned to the game as an athlete in July 1981 for Highland League club Buckie Thistle. He declined Dundee United to join Peterhead. He played at Hong Kong Rangers before again returning to his home with Highland League club Nairn County in August 1982. In February of the following year when he returned to his former boss Tommy Docherty at Sydney Olympic and later moved onto becoming the only European player to be a part of Japan from December of 1983. He was a winner of titles and cups with Yomiuri prior to his career was interrupted by ongoing injuries.
In the summer of 1995 he joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle, who were playing in the Scottish Third Division at that time. Paterson spent seven and a half years at Caley Thistle, their longest-serving manager to date. During this time, he took the club from the Third Division to the First Division and presided over the team’s famous victories against Celtic (resulting in the well-known newspaper headline “Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious”) and Hearts in the Scottish Cup.
