Logan was born in Lawton, Oklahoma and grew up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was a student at Broken Arrow High School where the school was a champion in basketball, football and track. Logan was enlisted by his coach Bud Elliott to play football at Emporia State University which is a Division II college located in Emporia, Kansas. He played for a season as an offensive back with the Hornets before deciding to stop his career. Logan was then able to transfer into his home at the University of Tulsa, planning to take up a job in college teaching. After graduation in 1975, Logan was appointed teacher of physical education as well as an assistant coach for football at Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
