On the 16th of September 1979 Hinton raced on the RB-51 on the RB-51 in Reno in the event that his plane was struck by a an engine malfunction that was catastrophic. Hinton completed the race second but crashed just near the runway. The plane’s fuel ignited in a blaze and the cockpit was blown away from the flame, and Hinton suffered a broken leg, back and ankle.

Hinton was appointed the chief test pilot of the Tsunami Racer in 1987.

In 1980, Hinton married Karen Maloney. Karen is the son of Steve’s close friend Air racing legend Ed Maloney.

He is still the only pilot to have done so. He was retired from racing in 1990. Son Steven Hinton Jr. Steven Hinton Jr. became the most experienced pilot ever to win the Reno Air Racing Championship in Unlimited class in 2009, at age 22. Steve is director of Planes of Fame Air Museum with two locations: Chino, California and Valle- Grand Canyon, Arizona, and owner of Fighter Rebuilders, a military restoration firm for aircrafts.

Hinton is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and charter member of the Motion Picture Pilots Association. He has worked on more than 60 films. In 2002 he received a nomination from the World Stunt Awards for the Taurus Award, Best Aerial Work in Pearl Harbor.
